Imps legend John Ward set for Port Vale job

Former Imps striker and Cheltenham boss John Ward is in talks with Port Vale with a view to becoming their next permanent manager.

"John is interested, but we need to go into a lot more detail regarding what his ideas are for the club," said Port Vale's chairman.

"We'll see what comes of that, but there are six or seven other people that we want to set our sights on."

Vale relieved Dean Glover of his responsbilities after an unpopular spell as manager, but Glover may stay on as part of the youth set up at Vale Park.

"He hasn't decided yet, but he's got to think about things. He's got a family to consider, and if he feels like he wants a break, that's entirely up to him. The decision is his."

However a shortlist is being drawn up today with a list of potential candidates for the job, so the job is by no means in the bag for the original Lincolnshire Poacher. Yesterday radio pundit Steve Thompson threw his hat into the ring for the job, although it's thought after unsuccesful spells at Cambridge Utd and Notts County that he'll be an outside shot.

LCM wishes John the best of luck with his endeavours to get back into management.
