Who is your all time City 'cult' hero?

Yeo - A cult hero at Sincil Bank
It seems hard to believe that former postman Yeo is the biggest cult player ever to grace Sincil Bank... possibly the nominations were a little flawed? He and Mark Bailey were both nominated, yet other glaringly obvious choices were overlooked.

What exactly makes a 'cult' figure. One who holds unusual records or feats (like Yeo's supersub appearances), or a flamboyant womaniser who drank well and played well? Perhaps its the no nonsense defender built like a brick outhouse and as uncomprimising as Mount Everest?

The dictionary defines cult as:

  • Obsessive, especially faddish, devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing.
  • The object of such devotion.

    No help at all really!

My own veiw of a cult player is one whom the fans take to their hearts for any reason, be it height, weight, social behavior, long hair or just be plain psychotic. My own nomination for the ultimate city 'cult' hero has to be... Nigel Batch.

The eccentric keeper spent just one season with City helping us to the 1988 GM Vauxhall Conference title. The previous year saw City slump to relegation for a second succesive season, but a Colin Murphy inspired City romped to the title on the last day of the season. Batch was a flamboyant character epitomising everything good about the game. He was talented with his seventies style beard and hair. Dads loved his experience and kids loved his wild runs upfield in search of a goal.

Who's yours? A profile of Nigel Batch will soon appear in the player profiles menu under 'cult heroes'. Every nomination will be featured in the profile with a grand vote for the winner from the top ten nominations here on the site!
