Player Ratings v Gills

Last updated : 29 October 2008 By Gary Hutchinson

One defeat in twelve games league and cup, unbeaten in nine (over 90 minutes including the Leicester game) and five wins out of six in October. Peter Jackson has to be manager of the month; the team look at times invincible. Where exactly is it going right??

LCM watched the game v Gillingham last night very closely, and came up with the following assessment of each one in an attempt to identify the reasons City are doing so well..

Rob Burch has really grown into the position as number one. When he arrived here he had just 12 professional appearances to his name, a figure he has now more than doubled and the match experience is showing. He was rarely troubled last night after a competent display but you get the feeling if he was called into action he could rise to the challenge.

Paul Green looked comfortable at right back and has a wicked right boot. His cross for the first goal was superb and last year's player of the season looks to be almost at his combative best. The full back slots have been a problem for a few seasons; right back has been an issue since Mark Bailey left. In Paul Green, we finally have a solid and hard working right back.

Lee Beevers is simply a revelation at left back. LCM always wanted to see the big Welshman from Doncaster in the centre of defence, but on the current form there isn't a single full back in this division that could displace him from the City team. Beevers rampages forward like Stuart Bimson in his prime, at the back wingers rarely get change for their ninety minutes of endeavour and somehow he always looks like scoring a goal. In LCMs opinion Beevers probably edged man of the match last night, and not for the first time this week!

Janos Kovacs is another one who has begun to achieve his potential and frankly last night was outstanding. Nothing gets past him, on the ground or in the air. Would have been a contender for man of the match and on this performance is worth every single penny of the £17,500 we paid for him. Gary Mulligan didn't get a touch last night, Kovacs kept him firmly in his back pocket for 90 minutes.

Danny Hone was the subject of a pre match rumour in the trust suite that he may be the subject of a £500,000+ bid in the transfer window, and there is no doubt whoever pays that will be getting an absolute bargain. Despite his youth Danny is strong, quick and like Kovacs didn't let his man get a sniff. Mark McCammon is no slouch, but he was always forced deep to get the ball by the excellent Hone. On this form Lincoln won't concede any goals again this season!

The Defence - The Verdict

Superb and a real improvement week on week. The last month they've looked as solid as any defence assembled at Sincil Bank in recent memory. All decent teams have to have a solid back four, and these days Lincoln have just that. Couldn't have been better last night if they'd bricked up the goal and gone home.

Lee Frecklington got the first goal and generally showed flashes of the Freck we know at love. He'll do well to outshine Oakes, but two goals in a week is no easy task at this level. He gets forward, causes problems and often found himself involved in the sort of passing moves that made Brazilian football the best in the world. In the second half City had to dig deep and battle hard, and Freck withdrew with a calf strain. A good display.

Stefan Oakes has a range of passes that can crack any defence wide open, and quite often isn't afraid to use them. At times he could be classed as a passenger, at other times can be classed as the orchestrator. If he hits five passes you can bet one will be poor, three will be inch perfect and the fourth will draw applause from everyone in the stadium. Radio Lincolnshire said last night 'if he had the legs he'd be in the Premiership', and they're not far wrong. The ex Leicester man is pure class and last night was no exception.

Scott Kerr simply is Captain fantastic. LCM is a big, big admirer of Scotty for his tough tackling, dogged displays. He sometimes gets out passed by his fellow midfielders, but he often outworks everyone on the field. Perhaps he could be described as unfashionable, only in the same way David Batty, Roy Keane, and Paul Ince were unfashionable. He's just so tough, always on the scene in midfield, can be relied on to help the defence out and even finds himself attacking every so often. Went off last night after getting a whack, but was superb all evening.

The Midfield - The Verdict

Best midfield in League Two on this performance, and with Shane Clarke knocking on the door they will only get better and better. The range of passing and variation in the play was at time a joy to watch, but when the going got tough, the lads in the centre of the park rose to the challenge. In the first twenty minutes these three players dictated the game.

Dany N'Guessen was again typical Dany. At times he hung on to the ball too long, at others he created chances from nothing. There's no doubt at all that he has the potential to play at a much higher level than this, if only his overall passing game could improve. There are signs he is trying, in the second half he squared for Patulea in front of the Stacey West when a shot looked a likely option. It'd be hard to talk about anything other than his goal though; a superb 30 yard run followed by as good a finish as you'll see this season. An on form Dany N'Guessan is a goal a game head start for City.

Lenny John Lewis was named Imps man of the match, but perhaps the sponsor were watching a different game. Not than Lenny did anything wrong of course, but of the three lads up front I'd have thought Lenny was least likely to get the accolade. However he switches wings nicely with N'Guessan, leaving full backs guessing all game long. He was strong last night, direct and aggressive. In the second half perhaps faded a bit as Gillingham roughed the game up, but overall a decent game from Saturday's goal scorer.

Adrian Patulea worked really hard all night and should have had two goals to put Lincoln out of site. The Romanian gets a lot of rough treatment, but shrugs it off and battles on regardless. Sometimes he goes for a header, other times he tries to slide round the defender to get himself clear. He'll score 15-20 goals this season, but last night wasn't his night. Every touch seemed to run away from him, and when he did get himself free he put good chances wide. Held the ball up well and will never shirk the dirty work.

The Forwards - The Verdict

Dangerous, hard working and creative. In truth it could have been 5-0 five minutes into the second half, Patulea should have had two and a good call for a penalty was turned down. That said they always looked lively, and again these three are as good as any strike force in this division.
