Striker search still alive

Released but not replaced - Wilford
Keith Alexander has cited a big centre-forward as his number one target as he attempts to strengthen his squad ahead of the first game of the League Two season at Shrewsbury Town a week on Saturday.

With five summer signings so far Alexander is facing a race against time to bolster his side with the new campaign less than two weeks away.

"The search goes on for new players, and in all areas of the field," said Alexander. "However, I would like a big target man because we have no-one to put pressure on Marcus Richardson.

"I'm still waiting for Ciaran Toner's decision on the deal we've offered him, but I'm hopeful he will come in." Toner has been offered a contract by City.

Toner will be the sixth new face for City adding to Michael Blackwood, Peter Foulkes, Dean West, Simon Rayner and Nathan Peat. However a seventh signing certainly seems likely.

Niall McNamara has been training with the club hoping for a new contract, but should his performances remain at the level they were last season there is little doubt he will not be staying on. The was talk of Aron Wilford also attempting to earn another chance but it appears he has missed the boat.

Martin Carruthers is also rumoured to have contacted Keith about a move to City. It appears his wage demands were a little excessive as he later confirmed he had signed for Boston United.
