Shane Nicholson - Returning to the Bank 18 years after making his debut?
It has been heavily rumoured in local press that ex Imp Shane Nicholson is ready to return to the Bank after an eleven year absence.
Shane first appeared for Lincoln in 1986 and went on to make 133 appearances scoring 7 times. Perhaps most notably he became City's youngest ever post war player when he apppeared for City in 1986 against Burnley aged 16 years and a handful of days.
Once he left City problems were never far away from the Newark born left sided defender. On the field Shane appeared for Derby County (whom he signed for from the Imps for a good fee of £100,000), West Brom, Sheffield United, Stockport County and more recently Chesterfield and Tranmere. It is from Tranmere he hopes to sign on a free transfer after not having his contract renewed.
However whether his 'chequered' past will be an issue remains to be seen. Nicholson has been in trouble with the FA for drug related issues. First off in 1997 he tested positive for amphetamines, but was later cleared of any wrongdoing after a friend admitted spiking his drink. A year later it was another positive test and the sack from West Brom. Perhaps it is a true testament to the defenders mental state that he managed to rebuild his career, proving he is as tough off the field as he is on it.
Rumours of Shanes possible transfer have been circulating for a week or two now, but with the deal yet to be finalised time will tell if the ex City hero will return to grace his old stomping ground one last time.
