Newey Left Back To Sign For City?

Tom Newey was released by Grimsby last season after playing over 150 games for The Mariners, and was approached by Peter Jackson regarding a loan deal earlier in the year. He turned that deal down stating he wasn't fit enough to do himself justice and once he regained fitness he signed on loan for Rochdale. However come the end of the season he found himself released by Grimsby and Rochdale failed to take up the option of signing him on.

Newey was a trainee at Leeds Utd before signing for Leyton Orient. He featured 67 times for Orient before a move to cambridge where he was unable to save them from relegation. He later signed for Grimsby where he has played the bulk of his football, but has been deemed surplus to requirements by Mike Newell.

It's rumoured that Lincoln haven't given up hope of drafting Newey in as cover for loanee Joe Heath. Newey can play left back as well as operating in the centre of defence and would offer the sort of cover that Lee Beevers offered.

However Newey would certainly have to be impressive to take anything from Jacko's budget at all. With Joe Heath in for six months, and three quality centre halves at the club and Aaron Brown able to operate at left full back it would seem Newey may be a luxury purchase if he does join on trial. Indeed it would seem more likely a fourth central midfielder will link up with the Imps, and certainly another striker.

The Imps chase for Rene Howe is ongoing and it's thought Peter Jackson is happy to spend a good portion of his budget on the bustling forward. Howe's presence could be just whats needed to compliment the likes of Fagan, Adams, Hutchinson and Clarke.
