Butcher to rejoin Imps?

Ex Imps midfielder Butcher faile to impress in Notts Countys 1-0 defeat last night, but if rumours are to be believed the powerful midfielder could rejoin City next season for his third spell at Sincil Bank.

County haven't lived up to expectations this season, and the promise of a promotion challenge made to Butcher hasn't been met. Butch is keen to test his skills higher up the football spectrum, but his career has faltered since leaving the Imps. A spell at Peterborough saw him surplus to requirements, and the fans at Oldham turned on him for no apparent reason. This season his form has been good at County, but he has been one of the few roses in a team full of thorns.

Butcher still lives in Hykeham, just a couple of doors from Alan Marriott, and still has a strong affection for the club that plucked him from the non league and gave him the shot at League football he craved.

Butcher made 114 appearances in all competitions in two spells at City, scoring 13 times. This season he has hit 11 goals in a ounty midfield that allows more attack through the centre than a Keith Alxander midfield did. However under Peter Jackson there is an emphasis on passing football that includes the players in the centre of the park, and that would suit Butch down to the ground.

Furthermore Peter Jackson will recall Butcher scoring the first of our two goals in the 2-2 play off semi final draw with Huddersfield. Perhaps Iffy Onuora, who played and scored for Huddersfield in the first leg will also remember Butchers talents.

A City fan said "Its often not a good move when players return to a former club, inany capacity. However if you look at the individual and take away the fact he's been here before, you have a quality midfielder capable of playing at a higher level. I'd love to see Butch back at the Bank and I'll bet Im not alone. We could offer Jamie Hand in return, he'll have conference experience which I'm sure Notts Couy may need next season!"

Whether the rumours are to be believed or not, theres little doubt Butcher would be a quality addition to Peter Jacksons promotion chasing squad of next season.
