Goalkeeper Jason Steele's late heroics then kept the Imps at bay as the game finished all-square at 1-1.
"Overall we are a bit disappointed not to get all three points, we were in the ascendancy in the first half, and although there were not too many clear chances we had a few shots that made their keeper work," said Sutton.
"This league is tight, everybody is capable of beating everybody else with the possible exception of Rochdale, who are a cut above the rest.
"It was a great free-kick from Matthew Saunders, we got the goal and are maybe a bit disappointed that we did not do enough to get the win."
