Janos Wouldn't Celebrate Imps Goal

Janos Kovacs scored the third goal on Saturday in a fine 3-1 win for City, and indications are The Imps could have turned the corner. However Janos was nominated man of the match by The Lincolnshire Echo, and earned a standing ovation from both sets of fans.

Kovacs scored last season against City, but latched onto a cross to nod home from a tight angle on Saturday. As he did his first reaction was to open his hands out to the away fans as if to say 'sorry, but this is my club', before a very muted celebration in front of the Imps fans. This sort of behaviour certainly endears him to both sets of fans.

City fans I think are beginning to realise that once he has settled Kovacs will become an important player for the club in the same mould as Ben Futcher and Jamie McCombe. His presence in the area is a big bonus, but perhaps it's the simple gesture that typifies the type of player we have here.

The fact he noted that Chesterfield were his club, and that he refused to celebrate the goal because of it shows we have a genuinely decent human being here. Imps fans can barely forget taking Peter Gain to their hearts, only for him to celebrate his goal against us for Peterborough like an FA Cup win. Behaviour like that isn't necessary, but behaviour like Kovacs is uncommon in an increasingly ungentlemanly sport.

Although LCM feels that the man of the match award was given more on the back of the goal and gesture than the ninety minutes, it was fantastic to see a player like Janos beginning to enjoy his football, and alongside Danny Hone I think City have stumbled upon their most effective defensive partnership.
