Chester City
Chester step up Ellison chase
Story by Chester Mad
2006-06-21

Chester City have launched an astonishing fifth bid to sign out-of-favour Hull City winger Kevin Ellison.
A £100,000 offer has been lodged for the left-midfielder, matching the sum tabled by Scunthorpe last month that was accepted by the Tigers.

Although Ellison eventually turned down a move to Scunthorpe in favour of seeing out his remaining year at the KC Stadium, a return to his former club may spark more interest.

Ellison spent a successful six months at the Saunders Honda Stadium, showing the form that persuaded Peter Taylor to part with £100,000. But with Tranmere also showing an interest in the 27-year-old, City would be certain to accept the chance to recoup the fee.

Chester failed with a bid to bring Ellison back during the January transfer window but chairman Stephen Vaughan has again stepped up his search.

"We have offered £100,000 for Kevin Ellison and it's about the fifth attempt we've made to sign him," Vaughan said.

"I know a League One club have made a bid of £50,000 which is nowhere near that (Chester's bid) so we're just waiting for a response.

"I have contacted the Hull chairman Adam Pearson and hopefully he will find our offer acceptable.

"I am determined to have a good go at winning promotion this season and the only way we will achieve that is with quality players."

Ellison's time at the Saunders Honda Stadium established him as a firm fans' favourite after scoring 11 goals during his short stay.

Having accepted the same £100,000 bid only a fortnight ago, Pearson would not stand in the way of his exit after last week underlining his plans to trim the playing staff.

But Ellison is unlikely to leave in the direction of Bristol City after the League One side distanced themselves from his signature.

Bristol City boss Gary Johnson has admitted to sounding out the Tigers about the 27-year-old, but he claims to have never entered into negotiations.

"We did make an inquiry but that's as far as it's gone," said Johnson. "We're not looking to take it any further at the moment."
